 American planes bomb Kandahar's defenders.
The Taliban's home city could fall within a few days, say Pentagon sources. Mullah Muhammed Omar, the Taliban's top guy, is urging his troops to ''achieve martyrdom.'' But some news sources say that Omar is afraid that his own people will kill him. They say he's trying to cut a private surrender deal with the Northern Alliance. Meanwhile, U.S. planes are pouring bombs on Taliban troops surrounding the city.

The world mourns the ''quiet Beatle.''
After a long battle with cancer, George Harrison died in Los Angeles at the age of 58. He was the best musician, technically, of the Fab Four, and he went on to cut a series of successful solo albums. He leaves behind classics like ''Here Comes the Sun'' and ''Something.''

The economy slowed more than the experts thought.
The gross domestic product declined by 1.1 percent during the third quarter. Economists had estimated a 0.4 percent drop. The revised figure is the worst in a decade. Experts now expect a 1.5 percent decrease for this quarter.

A captured fugitive is named in nationwide anthrax hoaxes.
Clayton Lee Waagner, who was one of the FBI Most Wanted fugitives, sent more than 280 fake anthrax letters to abortion clinics around the country, the bureau says. Waagner was caught after he had forced his way in to a home of a fellow anti-abortionist and confessed his crimes on tape. He had escaped from an Illinois prison, where he'd been facing federal auto theft and firearms charges.

Taliban holdouts shoot 2 body collectors.
Taliban fighters who had been hiding for several days among the corpses of their comrades shot 2 Red Cross workers in the basement of a Mazar-e-Sharif fortress. The fortress was the site of a violent riot by Taliban fighters. One worker was shot in the hand, and the other in the leg.

Afghan delegates try to resolve tribal differences.
The talks in Germany are continuing despite the walkout of one of the tribes, which claims it's underrepresented. But ''the show goes on,'' said a UN spokesman. The other groups have proposed names for representatives that they'll OK with their leaders back in Afghanistan. An interim council is supposed to run the country until more permanent arrangement can be set up in the spring.

A Canadian man is suing a strip club in Vancouver after one of the dancers accidentally kicked him in the head. Greg Bonnett was sitting near the stage when the dancer swung around on a pole and broke his nose. Bonnett says the club was negligent in failing to post signs warning of the danger of sitting too close to the dancers. And he's suing the woman--named ''Jane Doe'' in the suit--for ''dancing in a negligent and reckless manner.''
