From Tom Parsons - Changes Are In The Air For Frequent Flyers
Jan-16-2015

Frequent flyers will see some big changes in 2015. On Jan. 1, Delta SkyMiles program changes went into effect and members now earn miles based on how much a ticket costs, not how many miles are flown.

Elite frequent flyers earn the most miles per dollar spent and there are bonuses for purchasing first class and business class tickets. Discounted coach class tickets will earn the least, at five miles per dollar spent. United will follow suit with a program that appears be very similar to Delta's beginning March 1.

One thing to remember is that miles will be awarded for the base fare and any airline imposed fees, but government taxes and fees paid do not count towards miles. If you are going to Europe, the fuel surcharge would be included in the amount that qualifies for miles because it is an airline imposed fee.

American has its hands full right now with the merger of its AAdvantage program with the US Airways Dividend Miles programs coming in the second quarter of 2015. This doesn't mean American won't follow suit, but it likely wouldn't happen until after it finishes the merger of the AAdvantage and Dividend Miles flyer programs.

American is offering double miles and other bonuses, but those don't come close to what Delta is offering to elite and super elite travelers. Delta is offering Diamond members 11 miles per dollar spent and Platinum members nine miles per dollar spent on fares. American will likely have to up the ante for its highest level flyers.
