Homeowners Featured on HGTV's 'Love It Or List It' Are Suing Over RenovationApr-19-2016
North Carolina couple Deena Murphy and Timothy Sullivan are suing Big Coat TV, a company that owns and produces HGTV's Love It Or List It after participating on the show.
Love It Or List It shows a crew renovating a home during an hour-long episode. By the end of the episode, the homeowners are shown other homes in the area before having their newly renovated home revealed.
Murphy and Sullivan contend that after participating in the show, they were victims of shoddy work - such as problems with the carpeting, windows painted shut, and large holes left behind "through which vermin could enter the house," reports the Miami Herald.
Furthermore, they claim they suffered a breach of contract and unfair trade practices in violation of North Carolina's general contractor laws.
"The show is scripted, with 'roles' and reactions assigned to the various performers and participants, including the homeowners," the lawsuit states.
The couple was asked to deposit $140,000 to the production company which would then be used to pay Aaron Fitz, the contractors, for their work on the house. However they claim only $85,786.50 was distributed to Aaron Fitz.
Maria Armstrong, CEO and executive producer of Big Coat Productions/Big Coat TV, said in a statement: "We are aware of the lawsuit... [and] we do intend to vigorously defend what we consider to be false allegations."
