Google Can Predict How Successful an Employee Will Be
Google has become famous for asking job candidates very bizarre questions: "How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?" "Why are manholes round?" "If you were shrunk to the size of a nickel and then dropped into a blender and had only 60 seconds to escape, what would you do?" But there is one Holy Grail question that can predict how successful a candidate will be if hired: "On a scale of one to five, rate yourself as a software engineer." Or "On a scale of one to five, rate yourself as a marketing specialist." There IS a right and wrong answer: For Men, the magic number is 4. Google says they factor in that most men overstate their competency and level of self-awareness. If a male candidate says 4, it shows humility and an openness to learning new things. For Female candidates, there is a different "right answer": When asked to rate themselves on a scale of one to five, Google wants women who say 5. Google says when a women says she's a 5, she's usually even better than that and has a higher IQ than women with a different answer. The not-so-fun double standard about the workplace: Women are held to higher moral and ethical standards than their male counterparts.
