ACLU vs Boston cops
Feb-01-2010

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Boston police officers who arrested a man who used his cell phone to record their alleged use of force against a suspect.

The lawsuit filed today seeks unspecified damages related to attorney Simon Glik's October 2007 arrest. It also is seeking to stop police from arresting people who openly record their actions in public. Glik's attorneys say several similar lawsuits have been filed.

Police charged Glik with violating the state's wiretap law, which bans secret voice recording of communication. A Boston Municipal Court judge threw out the charges because his recording had not been made in secret.

The lawsuit also names the city of Boston.

A Boston police spokesman declined immediate comment on the lawsuit
