From Warren Eckstein - Parents Adopt the Dog That Was With Their Son When He Was Killed in AfghanistanJun-11-2014
The parents of a fallen hero have decided to give a forever home to the dog that was by their son's side when he was killed in action.
Staff Sergeant Christopher Diaz died when he hit an IED in Afghanistan in 2011, while rushing to help a wounded Marine during a raid.
His partner, a military dog named Dino, managed to survive the attack.
Dino served alongside Christopher for several years, his job was to sniff out IEDS and save lives.
Following Christopher's death, his father, Salvador Diaz, asked to adopt his son's constant companion.
The LA Times Reports that the law allows military dogs to be discharged if it will help a family deal with their grief.
In this case, Dino will do just that. So the Secretary of the Navy allowed the pup to be discharged from his service into the loving hands of the Diaz family.
But first, Dino had to pass a test with military dog trainers to ensure he didn't suffer from the canine equivalent of PTSD.
Thankfully, Dino passed and he will find his new home in El Paso with the Diaz family.
