From Tom Parsons - Double Dip: Rack Up Miles With American And US Airways Credit Cards
From Tom Parsons - Double Dip: Rack Up Miles With American And US Airways Credit Cards
Feb-20-2015

American and US Airways are still working on their merger, and are expecting to combine their frequent flyer programs into one program in the second quarter of this year.

Which is not very long from now; in the meantime, travelers can rack up some bonus miles for signing up for their frequent flyer credit cards. Travelers can earn up to 50,000 bonus miles by signing up for a new US Airways Premier MasterCard and also 50,000 miles for signing up for the Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard. Once the two airlines fully merge, your US Airways miles will transfer to American AAdvantage miles.

This is an easy way to earn 100,000 miles. Roundtrip award tickets on American start at 25,000 miles for travel within the continental U.S., and to Canada, to Mexico and to the Caribbean, 30,000 to Central America, 35,000 to Hawaii and 40,000 to Europe. 100,000 miles are worth four domestic award tickets, three tickets to the Caribbean, almost three tickets to Hawaii and two tickets to Europe. Some Caribbean tickets can be $700 to $1,000, so it can be a great destination to choose when cashing in miles.

You can also use miles to upgrade your tickets and this can be much cheaper than paying for a business or first class ticket. American charges 15,000 miles, plus $75, one-way to upgrade from a discount economy class ticket to the next class of service for flights within the continental U.S. and to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.
