Walnuts 'cuts risk of breast cancer'
Walnuts 'cuts risk of breast cancer'
Sep-09-2011

A handful of walnuts a day could help reduce the risk of breast cancer.
A study involving mice revealed rates of cancer halved, and tumours were smaller, when they were given the nuts in their diet.
The amount of nuts eaten by the mice was equivalent to two ounces for humans.
Elaine Hardman, who led the study at Marshall University, West Virginia, said: "The results indicate that increased consumption of walnut could reduce the risk of cancer.
"What we put into our bodies makes a big difference - it determines how the body functions, and our reaction to illness and health."
The study, reported in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, gave nuts to mice via their mothers while in the womb and weaning, and as adults.
Hardman said other studies had also shown that multiple ingredients found in walnuts reduce the risk of cancer - or slow its growth.
