From Tom Parsons - Summer Fares Are Way Down In Select Markets
Jan-09-2015

At the start of each new year, I like to give a travel forecast, but this year I'm having a hard time because I don't know how the drop in fuel costs will affect airfares.

We are seeing a lot of deals for January and February, with some up until spring break, but after that, as long as fuel prices remain low, our crystal ball is fuzzy. You can see how the lower price of oil has affected prices when you fill up at the pump with gas now under $1.99 per gallon. Whenever the cost of fuel rises, the airlines are quick to up fares and fuel surcharges, but when the price drops, the airlines are not quick to pass on the savings to air travelers.

Southwest recently extended its schedule for travel through August 7 and we are finally seeing some summer fares that are not sky high. Because of the lifting of the Wright Amendment restrictions on long-haul domestic flights out of Dallas Love field, we have 17 new nonstop Southwest markets that we didn't have last summer. All 17 of them currently offer lower fares than what we saw last summer and some of them are half of what we paid in 2014. Both Washington D. C. and New York were selling for over $400 from Dallas last summer, but right now, you can purchase those fares for half the price. The new markets from Dallas include Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington, Chicago Midway, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York LaGuardia, Oakland, Orange County, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Tampa and Washington Reagan National.
