From Warren Eckstein - Pet Promise program arranges care for pets after owners have passedJan-14-2015
A unique partnership between Oregon State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and the Oregon Humane Society ensures that pets will be cared for once their owner has passed.
Owners who enroll in the Pet Promise program will have peace of mind by not having to worry what will happen to their pet upon their death.
The program establishes a legal document allowing the school's veterinary college to become an advocate for the pet after the owner passes.
The college will ensure that Fluffy or Fido receives appropriate health care and will work with OHS to find the cat or dog a new permanent home.
To enroll, owners can either make a donation of at least $25,000 to the OSU Foundation or bequest $50,000 or more in their will.
The college foundation can work with an attorney to finalize the arrangements and will notify friends, relatives or the estate executor that the cat or dog is enrolled in the program.
Upon the pet's death, half of the original owner's gift will support the Pet Promise program, and the other half will benefit the College of Veterinary Medicine.
To request an enrollment form, call the OSU Foundation at 800-352-7281.
