United Apologizes For Reinstating Sept. 11 Flight NumbersMay-22-2011
United apologizes for reinstating flight number 93 and 175, which were retired after September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
It is not uncommon when a major incident or crash of an airplane happens that flight number gets retired. We saw this with the Pan Am flight 103 and TWA 800. After the terror attacks United retired.
Flight 93 crashed outside Pittsburgh, and flight 175 hit the south tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Due to the codeshare and new merger of United and Continental these two numbers were accidentally reissued.
While the planes were not operated by United, they were assigned to a Continental plane with a United flight number.
After doing a little research today, although the flight numbers do not appear on United's website, we did find them on Continental's website today Thursday, May 19, 2011.
United flight 93 was assigned on a Continental codeshare flight from Houston to San Jose, CA. United flight 175 was assigned to a code flight operated by Continental between Boston and Newark.
I guess someone at Continental never got the memo, since you can still find these flight numbers on their website. Talk about a big oversight!
