From Tom Parsons - Government Cuts Impact Air Travel
Apr-05-2013

The federal budget cuts, known as the sequester, are having an impact on many government funded programs and they are causing a big mess when it comes to air travel.

Congress members are just coming off a two week recess and let's hope they all got delayed at least 90 minutes on their return to Washington so they are motivated to do something to fix the situation.

As part of the sequester, the government is cutting back on the number of hours air traffic controllers work and no overtime will be allowed. The cuts amount to about 10 percent fewer air traffic controllers on the job each day. We may be able to handle having 10 percent fewer air traffic controllers in Dallas, but cities like New York City could be in for big trouble.

New York City already has worst on time performance, with lots of congestion, and having fewer controllers will make the situation worse. The FAA has stated that it will have to reduce the number of flights that are in the system, so take-offs would likely be delayed for many flights. While these cuts went into effect on March 1, many federal workers need to have a 30 day notice of schedule changes, so we will start seeing the effects of these cuts this month.
