Calcium supplements linked to heart attacksJul-30-2010
Many older people take calcium supplements for the bone-loss condition osteoporosis, but a new study suggests these people could be putting themselves at an increased risk of a heart attack.
University of Auckland researchers said in a statement that calcium supplements were associated with an almost 30 percent increase in the risk of heart attack, and a small increased risk of stroke and mortality.
The researchers called for a reassessment of the recommendation that osteoporosis sufferers take the supplements.
Previous studies have shown no increased risk of heart attack with dietary intake of calcium, leading the researchers to suggest the risk is restricted to supplements.
A report on the study is published in the British Medical Journal.
