Foot Tanner Unsafe Says FDAAug-27-2010
It's sometimes hard to get your feet tanned, but those who use a portable foot tanning device called the Tootsie Tanner risk overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, the FDA said in a prepared statement.
The product labeling recommends 30 minutes of tanning time, but FDA testing found the maximum time of exposure should not exceed 20 minutes.
The agency also noted that the device has no warnings advocating the need for protective eye wear. Overexposure from the UV rays may cause immediate and long-term eye and skin injury, the agency noted.
The FDA issued a warning letter to device manufacturer IPCH, of Sugarland, Texas, on Feb. 3 requesting updated product labeling and a timer set to safety standards, but subsequently found that the company had gone out of business.
No adverse event reports have been filed related to the device's use.
The FDA cautioned that the device should discarded.
