From Andrea Metcalf - Do You Really Need To Wear Sunscreen Year Round?Sep-29-2015
In summer and at the beach, there is a focused effort to wear your sunscreen. But the temperatures dropping and daylight hours decreasing, wearing sunscreen may not be on your mind. Dr. Janet Hill Prystowsky shares her tips about sunscreen after summer.
Should you switch your SPF? How much SPF you use isn't directly related to what season it is. The most important thing to consider when choosing your SPF is how much time you're spending outside, how close you are to the sun (altitude), and how much of your skin is exposed to the sun. If you're skiing in Colorado, at a high altitude with lots of sun reflection from the snow, you bet you should wear SPF 50. Then again, you wouldn't ski in your bikini, so protecting your face would be enough.
In Florida though, where some people wear t-shirts year round, wearing SPF 50 would be the best call, even in December. The more bundled up you are and the less time you spend outside, the less SPF you need. Here in NY, I rarely wear any sunscreen in the winter, but then again I'm rarely outside when it's still light out, and I'm usually covered in multiple layers of clothing anyway.
