From Tom Parsons - It's Time to Make Those Summer Travel PlansApr-18-2014
It feels like we just finished spring break, and you may not be thinking about summer travel, but it is time to start planning.
School gets out in Dallas seven weeks from now, so summer is just around the corner.
When looking for fares, remember that the flexible traveler gets the best fares and the cheapest days to fly are usually Tuesdays and Wednesdays. While fares are often higher on weekends year round, Friday through Sunday fares can be up to $200 higher roundtrip in summer. The kids have a very flexible schedule in summer and it's very important for you to be flexible too and avoid the weekends. It seems like I always need a vacation when I come back from vacation, so if you come back on Wednesday, you'll only have two work days until it's the weekend.
Fares to and from small regional airports can be sky high, so look at nearby airports for cheaper fares. You may have to drive two hours, but the savings can be substantial. For example, we checked fares from Dallas to Fort Wayne, Indiana in July, and the roundtrip prices were $385 for travel on Tuesday or Wednesday, $429 for travel on Friday or Saturday and as high as $445 for travel Sunday to Sunday.
If you fly into Indianapolis instead, the roundtrip airfare was $279 for travel on Tuesday or Wednesday and $318 for travel on Friday or Saturday. Roundtrip fares to Dayton were $279 on Tuesday or Wednesday and $330 on weekends. It's about a two hour drive between Fort Wayne and both Indianapolis and Dayton and that drive could save a family of four $400, or even more.
Even if you are not going to a small regional airport, summer fares can be high to some cities, but cheaper to alternate airports. If you're going to Hartford, Providence or Manchester, NH, summer fares are averaging $400, but nearby Boston is as low as $278.
