Rob Richie - FAIRVOTE National Popular vote Interstate compact
October 30 2012
ROB RICHIE is Executive Director of FairVote and has been with them since its founding in 1992. Rob is an expert on international and domestic elections and electoral reform.
Richie graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in philosophy in 1987. Before co-founding FairVote and becoming its director in 1992, he worked for three winning congressional campaigns in Washington state and for non-profit organizations in Washington and the District of Columbia.
FairVote is a catalyst for reforming our elections to respect every vote and every voice through bold approaches to increase voter turnout, meaningful ballot choices and fair representation.
The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and the District of Columbia). Under the National Popular Vote bill, all of the state's electoral votes would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes-that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538).
The bill has had bipartisan support. In a recent vote in the Republican-controlled New York Senate, the chamber approved of the bill 47-13; Republicans supported the bill 21-11, and Democrats supported it 26-2.
