Harvey Molotch - Author of AGAINST SECURITY
January 21 2013
HARVEY MOLOTCH is professor of sociology and metropolitan studies at New York University. He is the author of Where Stuff Comes From: How Toasters, Toilets, Cars, Computers, and Many Other Things Come to Be As They Are.
AGAINST SECURITY explains how our anxieties about public safety have translated into command-and-control procedures that annoy, intimidate, and are often counterproductive.
The author argues that we can use our existing social relationships to make life safer and more humane. He begins by addressing the misguided strategy of eliminating public restrooms, which deprives us all of a basic resource and denies human dignity to those with no place else to go.
Subway security instills fear through programs like "See Something, Say Something" and intrusive searches that have yielded nothing of value.
At the airport, the security gate causes crowding and confusion, exhausting the valuable focus of TSA staff.
Finally, Molotch shows how defensive sentiments have translated into the vacuous Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site and massive error in New Orleans, both before and after Hurricane Katrina. Throughout, Molotch offers thoughtful ways of maintaining security that are not only strategic but improve the quality of life for everyone.
Against Security argues that with changed policies and attitudes, redesigned equipment, and an increased reliance on our human capacity to help one another, we can be safer and maintain the pleasure and dignity of our daily lives.

David McMahon - Cardiol
January 17 2013
DAVID McMAHON is the founder of Solana Health. He discovered a natural remedy for high cholesterol out of necessity.
Almost 30 million people took Statin drugs last year but a reported 20 to 30% of those patients suffered from muscle pain. In rare cases statins can also cause liver damage, kidney failure and even death. There is also mounting evidence that Statins are directly linked to increased cases of diabetes.
David watched his diet and exercised to try to keep it under control. This strategy worked for 20 years... but when he turned 40, he had a physical and his total cholesterol was 238 and it was the worst combination - high "bad" LDL Cholesterol (163 mg/dl) and low HDL "good" Cholesterol (33 mg/dl).
Lucky for him his doctor had seen too many Statin side effects so he always tried a natural approach first. He suggested he try Red Yeast Rice, Omega-3 and CoQ10; they have all been clinically proven to lower cholesterol and help with long term heart health.
He talked to a friend based in Europe who told him about Cardiol, an all-in-one cholesterol lowering supplement. Cardiol is formulated based on a clinical study published by the Mayo Clinic and has been used for years in Europe.

Jewel - Children's Book, Greatest Hits Album and Tour on the way!
January 10 2013
Her name is JEWEL. Jewel Kilcher. (Yes, Jewel is her real given name). She has green eyes, like her grandmother Ruth. Ruth was an aspiring opera singer who left pre-war Germany, and headed to Alaska to marry a man she hardly knew because she felt her future children must be born somewhere free.
Grandma Ruth taught her 8 children (she gave birth to most of them alone in a dirt floored log cabin!) to sing and play instruments.
Jewel lived far from town, in a saddle barn... No running water, no heat, just a coal stove and an outhouse.
Her parents divorced when she was 8, and her dad (Atz Kilcher) and she became a duo. They sang at Veterans clubs, bank openings, biker bars and honky-tonks all over the state.
Jewel moved out on her own when she was 15; had a one room cabin, with no water or plumbing and worked several jobs.
She applied to a fine arts school in Michigan, called Interlochen, and was accepted on a partial scholarship. She raised the rest of the money by doing her first solo show ever at the local high school in the auditorium. She sang a variety of Cole Porter songs, and her home town of Homer, Alaska raised $11,000 for her during that concert.
At spring break she couldn't afford to get back to Alaska, so she decided to learn 4 chords on the guitar and get on a train in Detroit to busk her way across the country.
She made it to San Diego and there, she crossed the border into Tijuana and hitch-hiked to Cabo San Lucas.
She carried a large skinning knife for protection and earned enough money singing to get on a ferry and cross the Sea of Cortez and take trains through central Mexico. She stayed in youth hostels and ate by singing in restaurants in exchange for food.
She finally earned enough to train her way back to Michigan and school. The whole time she wrote one song, her first song, about the people she met and the things she'd seen. The song later became her first SMASH hit "Who Will Save Your Soul".
After she graduated, she drifted and ended up back in San Diego, where she answered phones in a computer warehouse. Her boss fired her because she wouldn't sleep with him, and she ended up homeless for a year.
She kept writing songs, and started singing in a local coffee shop and developed a loyal following. No one knew she was homeless.
A radio station decided to put a bootleg recording of her on the air and a record label heard it. Soon after, she was signed to a record label and they allowed her to be a simple songwriter.
Against all odds her simple album went on to sell 12 million copies!
So, this is Jewel. She has been blessed to experience some amazing things in her life. She sang at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, toured and got to sing with Bob Dylan, BB King in England, and in the White House for President Clinton. She also got to be on Merle Haggard's album of #1 Hits.
Of her many success, Jewel says: "I have sold more records than a songwriter ought to."
- Has sold over 27-million albums since her 1995 debut.
- GREATEST HITS album coming Feb 5th, including guest vocals by Kelly Clarkson and The Pistol Annies. Plus, a brand new single.
- Her family is featured in the Discovery TV series: "Alaska: The Last Frontier." The series theme song is sung by Jewel's father, Atz.
- Recently published her first children's book: THAT'S WHAT I DO.
- Jewel played the lead role as June Carter Cash in the made-for-TV movie "Ring of Fire" on the Lifetime Network.
- She will appear at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on January 17, then she begins her "Greatest Hits" national tour March 7th.
