Katherine Snedaker - Pink Concussions
October 30 2013
PINKCONCUSSIONS.COM is working on a research project on "Female athletes from all sports, and their past and present experiences with concussions" with Dr. Jimmy Sanderson and Dr. Melinda Weathers, two researchers from Clemson University. The study has been approved by the IRB at Clemson University and they will publish the results this Spring.

Through social media, they currently have over 540 women signed up for the project and over 391 completed online survey. They plan on recruiting more to be in the study, until it closes on October 31.

They want to understand from an experiential standpoint:

What female athletes experiences of concussions are from their point of view?

How many concussions have been from sports and which sports?

If female athletes have reported past concussions or have played through their head injuries?

Why athletes (in this case, female athletes) are not reporting concussions?

Beyond sports-related concussions, have these athletes had non-sport concussions?

What long term symptoms, if any, persist today in their day to day lives?

They will also create a database of women's names, data, etc, with their permission; and hopefully other researchers will want to do follow-up studies in the future. Most importantly, just simply conducting this study, we want to raise public awareness for women with concussions.

The study itself will allow any woman who wishes a chance to tell her story - in survey form - and for her to feel she is a part of our project and hopeful not alone. We hope this study helps in some small way to make this issue visible to the public and press, and creates a community feeling for the women involved.
