New Microsoft Operating System on the Horizon |
|
|
Vista is Microsoft's new operating system which will replace Windows XP. Vista
was called Longhorn during development.
Release date has not been announced by Microsoft as of now but it will be next
year by at least the fall. However, if you are purchasing a computer this year
you will want to make sure you can upgrade once Vista is released.
I will cover my best guess on what that PC/specification should contain:
Avoid spending extra dollars on the fastest processor, any midrange Intel Pentium
or AMD Athol will run Vista. I would consider 64 bit technology over 32 bit in
this area even though it won't be necessary to run Vista.
Memory - make that 1 gig for 32 bit system and 2 gig for 64 gig system. Microsoft
will probably say you only need 512MB...forget it!
Video - many computers come with a built on the mother board video....don't get
that one....get one that has a separate card with at least 64MB of video RAM....better
yet get 128MB since it is very inexpensive. You will need the video to take advantage
of Vista's full line of new features.
Hard Disk - 160 gig minimum with at least 7,200 RPM and 2MB of cache....I would
get even larger if not to expensive. The new features in Vista will eat up disk
space even more than XP.
DVD Drive - Vista will have much improved DVD recording features for storing videos
and backing up information so get a PC with a fast multiformat DVD drive.
Don't get short on your next purchase unless you intend on using XP for the rest
of the computers life cycle.
