Increasing water intake by a small amount has big benefits, study finds
March 5, 2016
It's a frequent entrant on New Year's resolutions lists: Drink more water. Now, research out of the University of Illinois provides some compelling reasons to make the Herculean effort to pick up another glass.
Researchers found that upping the proportion of plain water consumed by one percentage point-you read that right-reduced the amount of calories, sugar, sodium, and cholesterol ingested; those who upped it by a cup or two saw those benefits grow significantly.
As reported in Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, the researchers analyzed consumption data provided by 18,311 adults as part of a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that ran from 2005-2012.
Researcher Ruopeng An found the average adult consumed 4.2 cups of plain water daily (tea and coffee weren't a part of this total). That made up just more than 30 percent of their total dietary water intake, which did include other beverages, per a press release.
But just a "one percentage point increase in the proportion of daily plain water in total dietary water consumption" resulted in eating 8.58 fewer calories, 0.74 fewer grams of sugar, 9.8 fewer milligrams of sodium, and 0.88 fewer grams of cholesterol.
But add a whole extra glass or two or three and the numbers get meatier: as many as 205 fewer calories, 18 fewer grams of sugar, 235 fewer milligrams of sodium, and 21 fewer grams of cholesterol.
The findings held regardless of race, ethnicity, and income, suggesting we could "promote plain water consumption... in diverse population subgroups without profound concerns about message and strategy customization," says An.

'Super lice' outbreak hits 25 states
March 5, 2016
An outbreak of so-called 'super lice' has hit 25 states, forcing parents to deal with a bug that can't be killed by most over-the-counter medications.
As the outbreak has spread, parents are finding medicine that used to easily take care of the problem is now often useless. Pyrethroids were an invincible treatment to lice as recently as 2000, but work only about 25 percent of the time now.
The states experiencing the populations of drug-resistant lice are California, Washington, Arizona and Texas in the West; Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the Midwest; Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, the Carolinas and Virginia in the South; and Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut in the Northeast.
A new treatment called AirAlle has been approved by the FDA and been found to be more effective than medication.
"We use heated air, and we dehydrate the lice and the eggs in a single treatment," said Claire Roberts, CEO of Lice Clinics of America. "It takes about an hour, and we guarantee it."
The treatments cost about $170 are covered by some insurance companies.
Prevention is still the best medicine however. Kids should be taught to avoid sharing combs, brushes, and hats.
If your child does come how with lice, the proven tactics of using a lice brush and picking through your child's hair still work. Also, vacuuming where hair has fallen, washing bedding in hot water and putting clothing and stuffed animals in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes is recommended. Also, Pyrethroids can still be effective in some cases.

From Pauline Frommer - Santorini to Limit Cruise Visitors
March 4, 2016
As any parent knows, kids hold grudges. And my kids still bring up the day I made them hike for 45 minutes up a steep cliff path, in 95 degree heat, from where the cruise ship tendered us in Santorini, up to the village of Thira.
In my defense, our choices were limited: there was a 2 hour wait for the funiculur (which was having mechanical problems) and an hour long wait to ride a donkey up the path we were trudging. So up we went, and our first hour in the trinket-laden village was spent dazed at a cafe, gulping down lemonades. Our plan to explore beyond Thira went out the window, so we simply wandered from one tourist shop to another, bored and overheated.
My guess is our cruise port stop in Santorini was the rule rather than the exception.
Like Italy's Cinque Terre, which last week decided to limit the number of visitors it has been getting, this little Greek isle is being overrun with visitors. In 2015 it got more port stops than Piraeus (the port for Athens), welcoming some 790,000 cruise passengers, with 3.6 boats docking in its port daily in high season.
So officials of the island have announced that they will limit the number of cruise visitors to "just" 8000 per day.
And that may well mean that a good number of cruise lines will have to adjust their schedules for the upcoming summer season, as landing rights become more limited.
Which should be a blessing. Sure, Santorini was pretty but it would have been more pleasant without Disney World-sized crowds at every turn... and a walk straight up a cliff.

Soccer Star Brandi Chastain Pledges To Donate Brain To Concussion Research
March 4, 2016
Brandi Chastain told her 9-year-old son, Jaden, on Monday morning that she intends to donate her brain to science to benefit concussion research.
"Mom, that's weird," Jaden said. "Don't you need your brain?"
Chastain - a two-time Olympic gold medalist who won the World Cup with the 1999 U.S. Women's National Soccer Team - explained to Jaden that her brain donation will happen "long after" she will be using it, and with the intention of helping others.
Chastain announced Wednesday that she will donate her brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works with brain researchers at Boston University, after her death.
Chastain met Concussion Legacy Foundation founder and former professional wrestler Chris Nowinski and Boston University researchers Ann McKee and Robert Cantu in March 2014 when they received an award from Santa Clara University's Institute of Sports Law and Ethics (ISLE). Chastain is a board member there.
Cantu and McKee at Boston University led research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the neurodegenerative disease linked to sub-concussive trauma in athletes and military members.
Chastain was inspired by the researchers' work and told her fellow ISLE board members she'd "like to change the rules of soccer and take heading out of youth soccer to protect our young players". By June 2014, Chastain had teamed up with the Concussion Legacy Foundation to launch an initiative called Safer Soccer that aims to reduce the practice of headers in youth soccer.
"It's not about taking headers out of soccer forever," Chastain told BuzzFeed News Tuesday. "It's about protecting the players when they're their most vulnerable so they can continue to play well into adulthood.
"There's so many skills that our kids will learn in the game if given a chance at longevity. I want as many kids playing soccer in their adult lives as possible."
Chastain was never diagnosed with a concussion during her career, though she recalls at least two instances that today she believes would have been diagnosed as mild concussions. "I've definitely headed the ball multiple times after the ball was punted very high. I never shied away from the ball and I definitely had my bell rung a few times."
Chastain's 1999 Women's World Cup teammates Michelle Akers and Cindy Parlow's careers were cut short in part due to concussions, but Chastain said she never discussed the issue with teammates. "It was absolutely never a conversation," Chastain said, pointing out the enormous gap in cultural awareness about the effects of concussions on long-term cognitive health between the late 1990s and today.

North Korean leader wants nukes ready to fly
March 4, 2016
orth Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered nuclear weapons to be readied for use, the state-controlled Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday.
The shift in military posture would allow North Korea to carry out pre-emptive attacks, and deprive "the enemies to sleep in peace till the moment they meet their final end in their land," KCNA reported, citing a speech by the country's leader, Kim Jong-un.
KCNA continued: "The only way for defending the sovereignty of our nation and its right to existence under the present extreme situation is to bolster up nuclear force both in quality and quantity and keep balance of forces," he said, stressing the need to "get the nuclear warheads deployed for national defense always on standby so as to be fired any moment."
The move follows the U.N. Security Council's unanimous approval Wednesday of tough new sanctions against North Korea in response to its recent nuclear and long-range missile tests. The resolution contains the toughest set of sanctions imposed by the Security Council in more than two decades, Secretary of State John Kerry said.

Troy University adds exercise bikes to library
March 4, 2016
An Alabama university is helping students stay in shape while studying by installing exercise bikes in the campus library.
Troy University Libraries shared photos of the machines on their Facebook page, showing off three of the new exercise bikes that will allow students to use their laptops while they exercise.
"We are adding exercise bikes at the Dothan and Troy libraries that also have stations for laptop computers," they wrote on Feb. 24.
The university provided updates on the combination exercise/study rooms, the first of which opened at its Dothan campus.
Responses to the first room were largely positive leading the university to expand the idea even further.
A second exercise room at the main campus in Troy is set to open at the beginning of March as the university promised even more exercise equipment in the future.
"Troy campus by the end of next week at the latest," they wrote. "We are also ordering 6 elliptical machines that can go under desks that we will adding to this room. Most likely more bikes will be added as well."

Just When You Thought The Erin Andrews Story Couldn't Get Any Worse
March 4, 2016
Here's what we know for sure: On Tuesday, just hours after sportscaster Erin Andrews broke down at the stand while testifying about the long-term damage she suffered from the video recored without her knowledge by a stalker at the Nashville Marriott, a representative of the hotel walked into a nearby restaurant and sat down at a table with a couple of friends. Soon after, the leaked recording of a naked Andrews began to play.
Why, exactly, remains a matter of debate. Ask the representative Neal Peskind and his legal team, and they'll tell you that he quickly "objected" to the sight of the video, asking his friends to shut it off "immediately."
Ask the server who was present, however, and you'll hear something else. In a tweet that has since been deleted, the server claimed that Peskind said the video "was costing him millions so he was going to show it to everyone. [Peskind's] friends were making fun of her and her body."
"We had to ask him to stop. It was disgusting and horrifying," she continued.
At the courthouse on Wednesday, Peskind shrugged off responsibility for the incident. Asked if there was any truth to the story that he had shown the video to associates the prior evening, Peskind uttered only four words: "No. That is incorrect." He said no more as he walked away from reporters.
But later that day, Peskind released a more detailed statement after consulting lawyers about what exactly happened, confirming that someone at the table had played the video for an extended period of time:
I was at a private dinner meeting with friends. They brought up the allegations and they started viewing the video. I asked them to stop, and while they did so, it was not as quickly as I had hoped. This incident has been blown into something it was not. I would never disrespect Ms. Andrews and what she has been through ... I sincerely apologize for my participation in what happened.
Peskind's Marriott is currently being tried for negligence, as it let Andrews' stalker stay in the room next to hers, from which he altered a peephole and recorded the video, later unleashing it on the Internet.
Last Friday, a computer expert testified that the video had been played nearly 17 million times since it was first posted online -- and no matter if the play button was pushed by Peskind or by his friends on Tuesday, it's truly unfortunate that thanks to his table at the Margot Caf and Bar, that tally climbed to about 17,000,001.
