Nirvana, Lady Gaga Among Acts Releasing Record Store Day Black Friday Exclusives
October 23, 2013
Bob Dylan, Nirvana and Lady Gaga are among the acts releasing exclusive titles for this year's Black Friday event held by the organizers of Record Store Day.
Back to Black Friday, the newest iteration of the annual event, features a number of EPs, singles and live albums released especially for Black Friday -- dozens in all, including releases from major pop and indie artists alike.
Just a few weeks after the debut of "ARTPOP," her third studio album, Lady Gaga will drop a remix disc for new single "Applause," featuring contributions from Empire of the Sun, Purity Ring and more. The 12-inch record includes a picture of the pop singer.
Meanwhile, Nirvana's contribution is a remix/remastering of "In Utero," created earlier this year by producer Steve Albini, issued on clear vinyl.
Other artists participating include Dylan ("Side Tracks," a compilation of songs that have never appeared on a Dylan record), The Civil Wars (covers EP, featuring "Between the Bars," "Billie Jean" and more), the Flaming Lips ("Peace Sword," six tracks recorded for the "Ender's Game" soundtrack) and Jimi Hendrix Experience (7-inch vinyl featuring live versions of "Fire" and "Foxey Lady" from 1968).
Back to Black Friday will be held Nov. 29.

Robert Kennedy stole JFK's brain after assassination, new book claims
October 23, 2013
The brother of John F. Kennedy may have stolen the late president's brain from the National Archives, a new book claims.
"Not all the evidence from the assassination is at the National Archives. One unique, macabre item from the collection is missing -- President Kennedy's brain," James Swanson writes in "End of Days: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy," the New York Post reported.
According to Swanson, During John F. Kennedy's autopsy, the brain was placed in a container and temporarily stored in a Secret Service file cabinet before being put in a footlocker with other medical evidence in the National Archives.
"[It was] placed in a secure room designated for the use of JFK's devoted former secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, while she organized his presidential papers," the book says.

Has Anyone Died In Your Home? There's a Website For That
October 23, 2013
Think you're witnessing paranormal activity at home? Forget ghost hunters - there's a website for that.
Homeowners and renters can now get answers at DiedInHouse.com, which for $11.99 will tell you if anyone has died in your home.
The site, a sort of Carfax meets afterlife history report, scours multiple sources to determine if anyone has departed this life in your home before.
It's a task that's easier said than done, according to the site's founder Roy Condrey.
"It's harder to find things like this out than you think," he told the Houston Chronicle.
After Condrey learned that most states do not require home sellers or real estate agents to disclose a death there, he sought to create a service that provided death records for a specific address, according to his website.
That information might seem to make it tougher for realtors to sell a possibly-haunted property, but one survey finds that prospective buyers aren't easily spooked out of buying ghoulish real estate.

Facebook lifts ban on beheading videos
October 20, 2013
A temporary ban on graphic content was imposed in May following complaints about videos which depicted people being decapitated.
Facebook removed the reported videos and said it was reviewing its policy on this type of graphic content.
Now the company has relaxed its stance. It will allow violent content such as beheadings to be published, provided the intent is to raise awareness rather than celebrate violence.
Facebook's user conditions prohibit photos or videos that "glorify violence or attack an individual or group."
A spokesperson for Facebook said it will allow such content from users, provided they are condemning the actions depicted.

Four things we learned from government shutdown
October 19, 2013
Whew, it's all over, folks -- the twin crises of government shutdown and national default countdown. At least for now.
This one wasn't easy. And we'll be talking about it for a while.
That's just one of the four lessons we take away from this calamity in our capital.
A walk in the park
We love our parks. Boy, do we love our national parks. That was evident in a public outcry, on social media and elsewhere.

It's over, for now
October 19, 2013
After all the bickering and grandstanding, the billions lost and trust squandered, it was much ado about nothing
The partial government shutdown's finally over. The debt ceiling debacle has been averted. Obamacare remains virtually unscathed.
The hardline House Republicans, whose opposition to the President's signature healthcare law set this all in motion, got pretty much zip -- except maybe their reputations marred.
"To say we as Republicans left a lot on the table would be one of the biggest understatements in American political history," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina tweeted.
But it's all temporary -- the cliched kicking of the can. In a few months, Congress will come back to fight the same battles.
For now, though, thousands of furloughed federal workers will return to work Thursday, the U.S. can pay its bills, and an economic superpower can again boast a functioning government.
Pundits will conduct a post-mortem of the bitter stalemate. And the public will look ahead to what's next.

$26G worth of rare, expensive bourbon swiped from Ky. distillery
October 18, 2013
More than $25,000 worth of one of the rarest and most sought-after bourbon's produced in Kentucky is missing in what investigators believe was an inside job.
About 65 cases of 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon were swiped from a secure area at Buffalo Trace Distillery's Frankfort operations, Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton said.
Melton told The Courier-Journal whoever stole the bourbon walked off with about $26,000 of the limited stock. That's about $25,350 in 3-bottle cases of 20-year-old Pappy and about $675 in nine cases of 13-year-old Van Winkle Family Reserve rye.
Melton told the Lexington Herald-Leader the bourbon retails for about $130 a bottle and is worth "$300 or $400 a bottle" on the secondary market.
"This is the mac daddy," said Melton, who doesn't drink bourbon but is well aware of Pappy's cachet.
Investigators in the case told WDRB.com the theft may have been an inside job. At least 50 employees have access to the area, though no suspects have been identified.

Big asteroid buzzes past Earth and will again in 19 years
October 18, 2013
One of the most dangerous asteroids on record zipped close by Earth last month.
It made headlines on Thursday, when reports said that there's a chance it could strike our planet in less than 20 years. Such a collision could unleash a force as powerful as a couple of thousand atomic bombs.
But NASA was quick to calm nerves and point out some very good news. The most dangerous known asteroids don't really pose much of a threat. And there are very few of them.
Also, the chances that this one, which the Ukrainian astronomers who discovered it named 2013 TV135, will collide with Earth are extremely slim, NASA said in a statement it called "a reality check."
The space agency is 99.998% certain that when it whooshes back around the planet in 2032, it will simply sail past us again.
