Members of Blondie, Cars, Romantics, Chesterfield Kings Form New Band
May 9, 2014

In the 1970s, hitmakers from the previous decade formed supergroups to continue on the arena circuit. In 2014, a quartet of hitmakers from the '70s is looking to get back to the garage and play straightforward rock 'n' roll.

The Cars' Elliot Easton, Blondie drummer Clem Burke, Romantics lead singer Wally Palmar and Chesterfield Kings bassist Andy Babiuk have formed the Empty Hearts, enlisting the assistance of Faces pianist Ian McLagan and Ramones producer-engineer Ed Stasium on their debut album. Savoy Label Group's 429 Records will release "The Empty Hearts" on Aug. 5, which will be followed by an October-November tour of the U.S.

Heartless Suspect Kicks Stray Cat On Video, Internet Tracks Him Down
May 9, 2014

The Internet puts up with a lot of stupidity, but it doesn't put up with abuse.

So when Andre Robinson and his pals allegedly posted a video (above) of him luring in a harmless stray cat, only to kick it into the air, Facebookers tracked him down. His friends can be heard laughing in the background. The video was shared thousands of times starting on Friday, and eagle-eyed commenters found that it was shot in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., according to New York Magazine.

Police received that information on Monday, and quickly tracked down 21-year-old Robinson and arrested him on a charge of aggravated criminal assault. He has eight prior arrests, including one for a knifepoint robbery in 2011, the New York Daily News reports.

An arrest report obtained by the paper states that the cat flew about 20 feet.
Veterinarians said a fall from that height could have caused serious injury to the poor kitty. Cops said it was a planned attack, in which Robinson said, "Watch this," before tempting the cat over with a few head scratches. That's when he allegedly punted the feline.

Neighbors said the stray had been hanging around for months and was playful and friendly, but they haven't seen him in days.

Hacker strikes again: Creep hijacks baby monitor to scream at infant and parents
May 9, 2014

If you have a wireless IP camera, then go to the manufacturer's site and check for a firmware update right now, before you are featured in the next story about a hacker invading the privacy of your home by remotely turning that camera against you to spy on you before screaming profanities at you and your baby.

At first, this story seemed like recycled news about the pervert who hacked a wireless baby monitor to yell and cuss at a baby girl. But that happened in Houston and the newest hijacked baby monitor happened in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Adam and Heather Schreck were awakened in the middle of the night by a man's voice coming from their 10-month-old baby's room. Mother Heather checked the video feed on her phone and saw the camera moving, but she wasn't moving it. She said:

"About the time I saw it moving, I also heard a voice again start screaming at my daughter. He was screaming, 'Wake up baby. Wake up baby,' and then just a long 'aaaaahhhh' screaming at her, I guess trying to wake her up."

After father Adam ran into baby Emma's room, the Foscam IP camera/baby monitor swiveled "from his petrified daughter to point directly at him." He told Fox 19, "Then it screamed at me. Some bad things, some obscenities. So I unplugged the camera."

Unplugging the device also "wiped" any evidence, making it "impossible" for the police to track the hacker. Heather also told CTVNews:

"What scares me even more is that if this person hadn't been screaming at my daughter I would not have known that he was even looking at her."

"So I have no way of knowing if he's done it before, how often, listened in on conversations between my husband and I in the house. (It's) just a real sense of violation that someone just walked into our life and (we) didn't even know it."

It's no surprise the family feels violated. The Schrecks "always thought the camera was secure because their Wi-Fi is password protected." And the father of a toddler who was yelled and cussed at last year also claimed that the "router was password protected and the firewall was enabled. The IP camera was also password protected."

Foscam wireless IP cameras go by different brand names in Europe, but those are not the only wireless IP cameras vulnerable to being hacked and turned into surveillance against the owners. A year ago, Qualys security researchers found over 100,000 cameras connected to the Internet. They warned, "Two out of 10 wireless IP cameras in the wild that can be found via Shodan will authenticate you with 'admin' without requiring password."

3-D Printed Guns Lead to Arrest of Man in Japan
May 9, 2014

It's a first: A man has been arrested for possession of 3-D printed guns, according to a report from Japan's NHK news service. Japanese police apprehended the 27-year-old after he posted video of his firearms online - perhaps not the wisest move in a country with strict gun control laws.

The alleged culprit, Yoshitomo Imura, works at a college outside of Tokyo. Investigators found five guns, though only two appeared to be functioning. No bullets were recovered, however (they can't be printed). The man reportedly said he thought what he was doing was not illegal.

In a way, it's surprising that it took this long. The first functioning 3-D printable pistol, called the Liberator by designers Defense Distributed, made its debut online nearly a year ago. The U.S. State Department later demanded that the blueprints to be taken down.

Thousands could have been printed by now, but even if they have, this is apparently the first time anyone has been arrested for having one.

Authorities in the U.K., another place with strong gun laws, did arrest a man on suspicion of printing firearms - but the parts later turned out to be pieces for assembling another 3-D printer.

In the U.S. some local governments have moved to regulate 3-D printed guns. Philadelphia last year became the first city to ban 3-D gun printing.

The first case of MERS in the United States is improving in Indiana hospital
May 8, 2014

A man, who has the first confirmed case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in the United States, is improving and is in good condition, said hospital officials in Munster, Ind.

The male patient, a healthcare provider who had been in Saudi Arabia, whose identity is not being made public, is hospitalized in good condition in Community Hospital and is improving each day, officials said.

"We are very pleased the patient is improving and no other cases have been identified at this time," Dr. William VanNess II, Indiana state health commissioner, said in a statement.

"The individual has received excellent care while at Community Hospital in Munster. The swift diagnosis and precautionary measures taken have undoubtedly greatly helped reduce the risk of this potentially serious virus spreading."

Could a Few Beers a Week Cut a Woman's Rheumatoid Arthritis Risk?
May 8, 2014

Having a beer a few times a week might help women avoid painful rheumatoid arthritis, a new study suggests.

The disease, which affects women more than men, is a form of arthritis linked to immune system dysfunction. According to the Arthritis Foundation, over 1.5 million Americans suffer from the disease, which typically begins in the 20s or 30s.

However, "long-term, moderate alcohol drinking may reduce future rheumatoid arthritis development" in women, said lead researcher Dr. Bing Lu, an assistant professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, in Boston.

Overall, moderate use of any form of alcohol reduced the risk by about 21 percent, but moderate beer drinking -- two to four beers per week -- cut women's odds for the disease by nearly a third, the study found.

The findings are published in the spring 2014 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.

In their research, Lu's group tracked the drinking habits of women in two large studies, the Nurses' Health Study and the Nurses' Health Study II. The first study began in 1976, and includes more than 121,000 registered nurses. The second includes more than 116,00 nurses, and started in 1989. Women answered questions about their health and lifestyle every two years and about diet, including alcohol consumption, every four years.

Long-term moderate alcohol drinking appeared to reduce the risk of getting rheumatoid arthritis, Lu said. But drinking a few beers per week seemed to have the best effect, providing a 31 percent reduction in risk.

NASA May Put Greenhouse on Mars
May 8, 2014

Plant life may touch down on Mars in 2021.

Researchers have proposed putting a plant-growth experiment on NASA's next Mars rover, which is scheduled to launch in mid-2020 and land on the Red Planet in early 2021. The investigation, known as the Mars Plant Experiment (MPX), could help lay the foundation for the colonization of Mars, its designers say.

"In order to do a long-term, sustainable base on Mars, you would want to be able to establish that plants can at least grow on Mars," MPX deputy principal investigator Heather Smith, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, said April 24 at the Humans 2 Mars conference in Washington, D.C. "This would be the first step in that ... we just send the seeds there and watch them grow."

The MPX team - led by fellow Ames scientist Chris McKay - isn't suggesting that the 2020 Mars rover should play gardener, digging a hole with its robotic arm and planting seeds in the Red Planet's dirt. Rather, the experiment would be entirely self-contained, eliminating the chance that Earth life could escape and perhaps get a foothold on Mars.

MPX would employ a clear "CubeSat" box - the case for a cheap and tiny satellite - which would be affixed to the exterior of the 2020 rover. This box would hold Earth air and about 200 seeds of Arabidopsis, a small flowering plant that's commonly used in scientific research.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are set for a live action return to the big screen
May 8, 2014

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are returning to the big screen in a new live action film. Yes, Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced this morning that the Power Rangers franchise is going to be coming back to a theater near you in the not too distant future.

The television series that started the multimedia franchise was launched more than 20 years ago, and has been running in some form continuously since that time. There have even already been two films produced, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" in 1997.

According to the press release, "The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world."

There is no word in the press release about any timeline for the new film, nor how-or if-it will fit into existing Power Rangers mythology. The press release does discuss that the fact that there is already "a deep and detailed mythology" but not more than that.
