Stars react to death of comedy legend Sid Caesar
February 13, 2014
Celebrities react to the passing of TV comedy pioneer Sid Caesar Wednesday at 91 at his home in Los Angeles:
- "From my vantage point, which was sometimes no further than an inch from his face, and one time nose on nose, he was inarguably the greatest pantomimist, monologist and single sketch comedian who ever worked in television. His ability to mimic foreign languages in double talk was extraordinary. ... He was a great flame who all the comedy moths wanted to be around, moths like Mel Brooks, Mel Tolkin, Lucille Kallen, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Joe Stein, Tony Webster, and in Sid's last year on television, Woody Allen." - Caesar's longtime collaborator and friend Carl Reiner in a statement.

Toyota recalls 1.9 mn Prius cars worldwide
February 12, 2014
Toyota on Wednesday announced a global recall of 1.9 million of its signature Prius hybrid cars, dealing a blow to a brand favoured by the eco-conscious including Hollywood celebrities.
The company said it decided on the call-back -- its biggest-ever for the vehicle -- after the discovery of problems with software used to control a power converter that posed a risk to drivers.
"Because, in the worst case, the car could stop while driving we do consider this a potential safety issue and that's the reason why we are implementing this recall," a Tokyo-based company spokesman said.
No accidents have been reported as a result of the defect, the world's biggest automaker said.

Uncle Ben's rice mix recalled after children get sick
February 11, 2014
A possible overdose of an important vitamin might be behind the mysterious symptoms linked to Uncle Ben's Infused Rice served at schools in Texas on Friday. The product has been recalled and the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to use it.
Students at three public schools in Katy, Texas, experienced burning, itching rashes, headaches and nausea after eating Uncle Ben's Infused Rice Mexican Flavor on Friday. The symptoms disappeared after 30 to 90 minutes.
A previous incident on Dec. 4 sickened 25 students in Illinois with similar complaints after the school lunch included the grain. North Dakota reported a similar incident at a day care on Oct. 30.

Shirley Temple, iconic child star, dies at 85
February 11, 2014
Shirley Temple, the dimpled, curly-haired child star who sang, danced, sobbed and grinned her way into the hearts of Depression-era moviegoers, has died, according to publicist Cheryl Kagan. She was 85.
Temple, known in private life as Shirley Temple Black, died Monday night at about 11 p.m. at her home near San Francisco. She was surrounded by family members and caregivers, Kagan said.
"We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for fifty-five years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black," a family statement said.

USA bobsledder locked in his bathroom destroys door
February 10, 2014
Trapped in a bathroom without any way of escaping, U.S. Olympic bobsledder Johnny Quinn was left with just one alternative.
Break it down.
"It was an unfortunate situation, but I got out safely," Quinn said on Today.
Quinn and the U.S. bobsledding team start their quest for gold on February 16. That leaves eight days for him to redecorate other rooms in the Olympic Village.

Sochi 2014 begins with teams, classical music and a flying girl
February 7, 2014
With lights, floats and flying, Russia kicked off the opening ceremony in Sochi as the world turns its attention to the costliest Olympic Games in history.
Spectators from all over the world watched the introduction of athletes that marked the official start of the Winter Olympics.
Light shows and music, lots of it, filled the air, starting at exactly 8:14 p.m. local time, or 20:14 in military time.
"Most of the ceremony focuses heavily on Russian classical music," said Konstantin Ernst, the main creative producer of the ceremony.
"Unfortunately, unlike London, we cannot boast a plethora of famous world-known pop performers. This is why we are now focusing on what Russia is best known for musically around the world; namely, classical music."

CVS to become first major U.S. drugstore to drop cigarettes
February 7, 2014
CVS Caremark Corp said on Wednesday that it would stop selling tobacco products at its 7,600 stores by October, becoming the first U.S. drugstore chain to take cigarettes off the shelf.
Public health experts called the decision by the No. 2 U.S. drugstore chain a precedent-setting step that could pressure other stores to follow suit.
CVS, whose Caremark unit is a major pharmacy benefits manager for corporations and the government Medicare program, believes the decision will strengthen its position as a healthcare provider.
"I think it will put pressure on other retailers who want to be in healthcare," said CVS Caremark Chief Medical Officer Dr. Troyen Brennan.
Although some U.S. cities, including Boston and San Francisco, already ban the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies, advocates hope CVS' voluntary decision will have a ripple effect among other pharmacy chains.
Some retailers stopped selling cigarettes years ago: Target Corp decided to drop them in 1996, while East Coast supermarket chain Wegmans Food Markets did so in 2008.
