Santorum sweep changes GOP presidential race
February 9, 2012

Rick Santorum swept the three Republican presidential contests Tuesday in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado, reshaping the race and raising questions about frontrunner Mitt Romney's ability to attract broad conservative support.
More importantly, the former Pennsylvania senator's trifecta halted Romney's momentum after the former Massachusetts governor had won the previous two contests and three of the first five prior to Tuesday.
Colorado was the most competitive state of the day, with Santorum winning 40% of the vote to 35% for Romney, 13% for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 12% for Texas Rep. Ron Paul.
After a night of returns trickling in and the lead shifting between Santorum and Romney, Colorado Republican Party chairman Ryan Call announced that Santorum was the winner.

Iran shrugs off latest U.S. sanctions, trade suffers
February 8, 2012

Iran castigated its U.S. adversary on Tuesday over new financial measures to disrupt Iranian commerce, and a default on payment for rice purchases highlighted the encroachment of sanctions on the staples of everyday life.
Lawmakers in Tehran vowed to ban crude exports to European countries even before an EU oil embargo takes effect.
The U.S. sanctions, targeting Iran's central bank and giving U.S. banks new powers to freeze Iranian government assets, were the latest in a tightening web of international measures aimed at forcing the Islamic Republic to scrap sensitive nuclear work.
"It is an antagonistic move, psychological warfare which has no impact... There is nothing new, it has been going on for over 30 years," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said, referring to three decades of U.S.-Iranian hostility.
Rice exporters said Iranian buyers had defaulted on payment for 200,000 tonnes of rice from their top supplier India in another sign that Western financial sanctions are playing havoc with trade, even in one of Iran's food staples.

$300 million in congressional earmarks fund projects near lawmakers' properties
February 8, 2012

A U.S. senator from Alabama, Richard Shelby, directed more than $100 million in federal earmarks to renovate downtown Tuscaloosa near his own commercial office building. A congressman from Georgia, Jack Kingston, secured $6.3 million in taxpayer funds to replenish the beach about 900 feet from his island vacation cottage. A representative from Michigan, Candice S. Miller, earmarked $486,000 to add a bike lane to a bridge within walking distance of her home.
Thirty-three members of Congress have steered more than $300 million in earmarks and other spending provisions to dozens of public projects that are next to or within about 2 miles of the lawmakers' own property, according to a Washington Post investigation.
Under the ethics rules Congress has written for itself, this is both legal and undisclosed.
The Post analyzed public records on the holdings of all 535 members and compared them with earmarks that members had sought for pet projects, most of them since 2008. The process uncovered appropriations for work in close proximity to commercial and residential real estate owned by the lawmakers or their family members. The review also found 16 lawmakers who sent tax dollars to companies, colleges or community programs where their spouses, children or parents work as salaried employees or serve on boards.
In recent weeks, lawmakers have acknowledged the public's growing concern that they appeared to be using their positions to enrich themselves.
In response, the Senate last week passed legislation that would require lawmakers to disclose mortgages for their residences. The bill, known as the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act, would also require lawmakers and executive branch officials to disclose securities trades of more than $1,000 every 30 days. At the same time, the Senate defeated an amendment, 59-40, that would have permanently outlawed earmarks.
The House is scheduled to vote on the Stock Act on Thursday.

Johnny Cash's 80th birthday, legacy to be celebrated
February 8, 2012

Johnny Cash is still cool.
Like Elvis or Hank Williams, Cash retains a certain cachet in current popular culture even in death. More proof of his enduring legend is on the way as plans to celebrate what would have been the American icon's 80th birthday unfold later this month and year.
There will be a groundbreaking on the project to preserve Cash's childhood home in Dyess, Ark., on Feb. 26, his birthday. A new Cash museum will open in Nashville later this year, and several music releases are expected to commemorate the anniversary of his birth. There are three documentaries in the works as well.
Interest remains as high as ever more than eight years after his death in 2003 at 71 of complications from diabetes.
"He appealed to people and still appeals to people who have a small CD collection and live in middle America, just as much as the punk on the streets of Germany," Cash's son, John Carter Cash, said. "And that's sort of magical the way he's been able to do that still, that his image still draws people from all walks of life."
The Cash family is most excited about the project in Dyess. Many of Cash's children and grandchildren will attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home Project, an undertaking led by Arkansas State University.

Mom Suing City For $900 Trillion For Placing Children In Foster Home
February 8, 2012

A Staten Island mother is suing the city for a staggering $900 trillion for allegedly wrongfully placing her two sons in foster care and claiming she was mentally unstable.
46-year old Fausat Ogunbayo, who is representing herself, says the Administration for Children's Services's decision to place her children in foster care infringed upon her civil rights and ultimately inflicted "over three years of terror, horror, grievous harm, time lost, substantial economic hardship and injuries."
The children, then 12 and 10-years old, have been out of their mother's custody since June 2008.
In court papers, the ACS references several peculiar incidents where Ogunbayo sought out medical treatment because she believed her children's skin color was becoming darker due to radiation. In a separate episode, the mother allegedly told school officials the FBI was after the boys.
While the city is contending Ogunbayo suffered from such hallucinations and in addition was an absent mother , a separate legal case last month ruled in favor of Ogunbayo with the court stating no substantial evidence indicating the children were ever in "imminent danger" while in their mother's care.
The Staten Island Advance reports that in fact, the two children had near-perfect school attendance and were "even thriving academically."
However, the mother claims that the ACS has yet to return her children to her care.

Apple Might Lose A $1.6 Billion Lawsuit For Using The Word 'iPad'
February 8, 2012

China-based company Proview Electronics is suing Apple for $1.6 billion and an apology for alleged infringement for use of its trademarked iPad name, reports Apple Insider.
Apple had initially bought the trademark from the company for $55,000, but the lawsuit maintains that the deal did not include rights to use the word "iPad" in China.
Here's the thing-Chinese courts have already found in favor of Proview, but Apple is appealing the decision.
Xiao Caiyuan, a lawyer for the company, believes Apple will lose the appeal and added, "We have prepared well for a long-term legal battle."

Last known WWI veteran Florence Green dies at 110
February 8, 2012

Florence Green never saw the front line. Her war was spent serving food, not dodging bullets.
But Green, who has died aged 110, was the last known surviving veteran of World War I. She was serving with the Women's Royal Air Force as a waitress at an air base in eastern England when the guns fell silent on Nov. 11, 1918.
It was not until 2010 that she was officially recognized as a veteran after a researcher found her service record in Britain's National Archives.
Green died Saturday at the Briar House Care Home in King's Lynn, eastern England, two weeks before her 111th birthday, the home said.
Retired Air Vice-Marshal Peter Dye, director-general of the RAF Museum, said it was fitting that the last survivor of the first global war was someone who had served on the home front.

Have a Healthy Heart
February 8, 2012

February is all about our heart! Since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February as "American Heart Month," a time when we recognize that heart disease is our nation's number one killer - and also a time when we urge Americans to join the battle against the disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event. The most common is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2010, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 had a recurrent attack.

The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be greatly reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors including high blood pressure and cholesterol that put people at greater risk - diet and exercise play a huge role in preventing these conditions.

A report from the CDC found that one-third of adults have high blood pressure, a third of them untreated, and half do not have it fully under control. A similar story for cholesterol levels, a third of US adults have poor cholesterol readings, half of them are untreated, and two thirds do not have their cholesterol fully controlled. CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden said that 100 million adults, nearly half the US adult population, have either high blood pressure or unhealthy cholesterol levels.

The American Heart Association projects that the costs of heart disease will triple between now and 2030, to more than $800 billion a year; treating high blood pressure was singled out as the most expensive part of the cost, rising to $389 billion by 2030. Now let's remind ourselves here, heart disease is largely preventable, through a healthy lifestyle including a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as staying active.

SupermarketGuru's healthy heart tips:
First off, create a shopping list, creating a list ahead of time not only allows you to make meal plans for the days ahead but also helps you focus your grocery trip. With a list, you can expect saving of around 20 to 25 percent.

So what should your list include?
Heart healthy antioxidant rich foods include: tomatoes, oily fish (such as salmon and sardines), green tea, carrots, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, alfalfa sprouts, cocoa (dark chocolate), berries, apples, and whole-grains. Studies have shown that those who ate 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day had a 39 percent lower risk of stroke than those who did not.

Blue and purple produce like eggplant, plums, red cabbage and grapes are rich in anthocyanidins which help lower risk of heart attack and stroke by dilating blood vessels - keeping the blood flowing freely.

Included on your list should be foods rich in essential fatty acids like nuts (unsalted), olive oil, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, avocados, salmon, chia or salba, trout, sardines, herring, and mackerel.

Garlic and onions are also important for heart health as they contain compounds that can help reduce cholesterol levels.

Drinking water and staying active is also great for your heart. Purchase a reusable water bottle and refill with filtered water - available in most places - so you can have water on the go, remain hydrated, and save money.

Making conscious choices when shopping or eating out can go a long way. Help out your heart with SupermarketGuru's shopping tips. And as always, please consult your physician before making any changes to your diet.

From Dr. Jay Kumar - Celebrating LOVE of SELF
February 7, 2012

There is a beautiful metaphor from the Eastern spiritual traditions that relates just as one can never truly describe the sweet flavor of an orange without tasting it...the same is true with love. One cannot begin to describe in words the joy and sweetness of love without tasting its fruit. Your first step to savoring the succulent and divine fruit of love in all aspects of life is to cultivate the powerful and all-encompassing relationship first to YOU by celebrating love of Self!

I often like to say that we are nothing more than "humans in divine play." We are all aspects of the universal divine energy choosing to have a spiritual experience in the physical body. Many of the religious and spiritual traditions of the world express the common belief that we are merely spirits, who consciously chose to incarnate into the physical plane in order to express and celebrate the divine and sacred love of creation.
The Indian philosopher and spiritual teacher, Paramahansa Yogananda, poetically describes that just as oil is present in every part of the olive, so too does love permeate all aspects of the universe. The way in which universe celebrates love is through YOU. Each and every one of you is a sacred aspect of divine creation, and you each carry within the divine spark of love that burns passionately at the core of your being.

Knowing that everyone embodies the eternal spark of divine love within, why is that so many choose to experience confusion, loneliness, fear, emptiness, drama or apathy in life? Why do you choose to close your hearts to the sacred universal love that, like the oil forever present throughout the olive, permeates all aspects of existence? To answer this question, I offer you a quote from the contemporary Buddhist nun, Pema Chodron, who so accurately states in her very eloquent way,"The only reason we don't open our hearts and minds to other people is that they trigger confusion in us that we don't feel brave enough or sane enough to deal with. To the degree that we can look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, will we feel confident and fearless about looking into someone else's eyes."

The key to experiencing genuinely nurturing relationships and to receiving authentic love in your life occurs only when you are able firstly to embody and love unconditionally ALL those aspects within yourself that comprise your true being.
Only by accepting compassionately without judgment all that you are-your light, your joy, your truth AS WELL as your pain, your vulnerability and your fears will you be able to extend unconditional love to all areas of and to all those in your life.

One of the fundamental tenets being advanced in the field of quantum physics is that the universe appears to operate on the "law of resonance and attraction." Additionally, theories from cognitive studies and neuroscience suggest that your thoughts are just fluctuating energies of consciousness. Since the universe is fundamentally comprised of energies vibrating at various frequencies, the frequency of energy that your thoughts resonate on and the belief systems you project will attract that exact same energy into your life. Simply put, whatever you believe about your Self is exactly what you experience. Your thoughts, thus, literally do create your reality! The universe is nothing more than an objective and impartial mirror that reflects back on to you EXACTLY what it is you believe about the world and about yourself. If for example, you are vibrating on a frequency of fear or self-loathing, the universe will simply mirror back to you situations, people and relationships that not only match, but also reinforce these patterns and belief systems. If, however, you choose to resonate on the frequency and energy of unconditional love and abundance, beginning first with yourself, the universe reflects back on to you these qualities that, in turn, manifest in all aspects of your life- especially in your relationships!

This principle, known as the "law of resonance and attraction," can easily be seen by a simple experiment. Placing two identical pianos in the same room, when you strike a key on one piano the exact same chord will begin automatically to vibrate in the other piano. This phenomenon of "resonance and attraction" occurs for you, as well, understanding that ultimately you, everyone else and the universe are governed by the same rules of physics. Just as the second piano mirrors back the same note from the first piano, similarly the universe and others reflect back to you whatever energy and frequency you emit. You attract what you resonate!
