Romney campaign fends off immigration questions
June 22, 2012
Mitt Romney's presidential campaign fended off questions on immigration policy on Wednesday as the Republican challenger scrambled for a response five days after President Barack Obama's relaxation of immigration policy drew accolades from Hispanic voters.
Questions on the Republican challenger's position on immigration dominated a campaign conference call Wednesday that was supposed to be about the economy. The call was cut off early after what a Romney staffer said were "off-topic" questions.
After taking a hard line during the Republican presidential primary season against illegal immigration, Romney has struggled to frame an immigration message that would appeal to Hispanics and keep conservatives in his own party happy.

From Andrea Metcalf - Standing Pilates - 5 Great Moves to Tighten Your Tummy and Improve Your Posture
June 21, 2012
Everyone wants a few must do moves to keep their muscles toned, lean and long. Experts agree that Pilates can deliver those results. Pilates is known for improving your posture and whittling the waistline. The moves focus on lengthening the spine and controlled breathing. Here are five great moves you can do standing up - ( All moves should be done standing with heels together and toes slightly wide keeping weight balanced in feet. Tuck tailbone slightly under and keep absdrawn into the spine.)
1) Shoulder "T" Squeeze - Arms out to the side at shoulder height with palms facing down. Keep arms straight and pulse arms backwards 30 repetitions while exhaling on the squeeze.
2) Arm Raise Lift - Start with arms at side palms facing the body, inhale to prepare. Lift arms up over head as you raise heels off the floor and exhale. Swing arms downward and squeeze shoulder blades when arms are at side. Repeat 20-25 repetitions.
3) Roll Down & Up - Raise arms over head and stretch through fingertips as you inhale. Exhale slowly as you roll chin to chest and follow the forward bending towards floor with knees slightly bend. Inhale and pause as the bottom, stretching the back of your thighs. Next exhale and slowly roll up one verterbrae at a time to return to hands over head. Take a deep breath in and repeat the movement 10 times.
4) Side Bend Reaches - Start with arms at your side and slide right hand down the side of your body as your left hand reaches overhead. Keeping arms extended, pulse three times with the top arm to the side and ceiling as the lower arm reaches down the leg. Repeat this move 8-10 times and change sides. Think of squeezing the rib cage towards the hip bone during this move to engage the core. Exhale on the reaches and inhale on the rest.
5) Twisties - Start with palms together in front of the body at shoulder height and inhale. Keep one arm forward and reach other arm to the back as you turn the waistline and squeeze the abs as you exhale. Return to center and repeat 8-12 times then to the other side.
Pilates breathing is important to each of these moves. Remember while exhaling to pull abdominals in towards the spine.

Sandusky doesn't testify; defense rests
June 21, 2012
The defense team for Jerry Sandusky rested on Wednesday without the former assistant football coach taking the stand.
Defense attorney Joe Amendola had told reporters earlier to "stay tuned" to see whether the former Penn State University defensive coordinator would testify. It was thought his testimony could provide the opening that prosecutors needed to introduce new evidence against the former coach.
Sandusky, 68, has pleaded not guilty to 51 counts related to accusations of child sex abuse against 10 boys over a 15-year period.
After the defense rested, the prosecution said it had no further rebuttal witnesses, and the judge scheduled closing arguments to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The prosecution had called its only rebuttal witness on Tuesday, to counter testimony that raised questions about Sandusky's mental health.
Dr. Elliot Atkins testified that he diagnosed Sandusky with histrionic personality disorder, a class of conditions called dramatic personality disorders, which are marked by unstable emotions and distorted self-images. But a second psychologist, prosecution witness Dr. John O'Brien, disputed those findings, saying that the "personality profile Mr. Sandusky exhibited was within normal limits."
Following closing arguments on Thursday, the jury is expected to retire to begin deliberations.

House panel backs contempt for Holder, Issa says floor vote can still be avoided
June 21, 2012
A House panel voted Wednesday in favor of holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, a move that inflamed partisan rancor on Capitol Hill and sets up the possibility of legal action against the attorney general himself.
Holder has not yet been formally held in contempt of Congress. The full House would still need to approve the resolution in order for that to happen -- Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., afterward told Fox News that such a floor vote can still be avoided.
But the 23-17 party-line vote on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee marked a significant turn in lawmakers' 16-month investigation into the botched anti-gunrunning operation Fast and Furious. With the vote, Republicans on the committee signaled they had exhausted all other means to extract sought-after documents from the Justice Department -- though Democrats had insisted there was still an opportunity to sort out the mess without a contempt vote.
"We and the American people need answers sooner, not later," said Issa, chairman of the committee.
GOP House leadership has given Issa the green light to proceed how he sees fit, sources told Fox News, which suggests the vote would reach the House floor.
Issa pressed ahead with the vote Wednesday despite an eleventh-hour move by President Obama to assert executive privilege over the Fast and Furious documents at the heart of the dispute.

NBC discussing plan to remove Ann Curry as host
June 21, 2012
In the midst of the first prolonged challenge to its morning supremacy in 16 years, NBC News is discussing a plan to remove Ann Curry as co-host of the "Today" show with Matt Lauer.
Curry, who has been with "Today" since 1997, replaced Meredith Vieira last June as Lauer's partner. Lauer agreed to a long-term contract this spring to stay with the show.
It's still uncertain whether Curry, who has discovered a passion for international reporting in recent years, will remain with "Today," according to a source with knowledge of the show who spoke on condition of anonymity on Wednesday because the source was not authorized to speak on the matter. The New York Times first reported the discussions about the possible change on Wednesday.
NBC News President Steve Capus and the "Today" executive producer, Jim Bell, did not immediately return requests for comment.
Savannah Guthrie, who co-hosts the show's third hour, is at the top of the list of Curry's possible replacements.

Kodak sues Apple
June 21, 2012
Photography pioneer Eastman Kodak Co sued Apple Inc to stop it from interfering with plans to sell a large patent portfolio, a significant part of its bankruptcy restructuring.
In a lawsuit filed on Monday in U.S. bankruptcy court in Manhattan, Kodak said Apple, the largest U.S. company by market value, wrongly claims to own 10 patents arising from work that the companies did together in the early 1990s.
Privately held FlashPoint Technology Inc also claims ownership through an assignment from Apple, which spun it off in 1996, and is also a defendant, Kodak said.
The patents include technology that helps camera owners preview photographs on LCD screens.
They are part of Kodak's digital-capture portfolio, which the company said includes more than 700 patents for devices such as digital cameras, smartphones and tablets, and has generated more than $3 billion in revenues since 2001.
Kodak said Apple is the largest infringer of patents in that portfolio, and also a potential purchaser of those patents.

NASA Orbiter Spots Mickey On Mercury
June 21, 2012
A massive Mickey Mouse did a face-plant on the surface of Mercury--or so it seems in a photo snapped recently by NASA's Messenger orbiter.
Was Mickey really on Mercury? Actually, the familiar face is simply a pattern of craters in Mercury's southern hemisphere--northwest of another known crater named Magritte. The crater resembling Mickey's head measures about 65 miles (105 kilometers) across, according to MSNBC.
"The shadowing helps define the striking 'Mickey Mouse' resemblance, created by the accumulation of craters over Mercury's long geologic history," NASA officials said about the photo on the space agency's website.
Messenger became the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury on March 18, 2011. While observing the planet, officials have been counting Mercury's craters--and there are quite a few.

Jackson Brothers Prepare to Tour Without Michael
June 21, 2012
Guided by a thumping bass line from their backing band, the Jackson brothers strut forward to a row of four microphones, thrusting their pelvises along the way, before launching into "Can't Let Her Get Away," a song their superstar sibling released on his "Dangerous" album. If they had afros and matching powder blue suits, it might feel like 1977 again.
It doesn't. They're casually sporting sunglasses, workout gear and a few more pounds than when they, along with the future King of Pop, were simply known as the Jackson 5. (Also, "Can't Let Her Get Away" was released in 1991 after the group fizzled out).
Nearly three years since Michael died while preparing for his comeback tour, four of his brothers - Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie - are set for their own return to the stage as The Jacksons. It hasn't been easy.
"The brothers don't know this, but I've broken down several times and cried during rehearsals," said Jermaine during a recent rehearsal break on a soundstage in Burbank, Calif. "I'm so used to Michael being on the right and then Marlon, Jackie, on and on. It's just something we never get used to."
The brothers are launching their "Unity" tour on Wednesday, five days ahead of the third anniversary of Michael's death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol on June 25, 2009.

Summer's Sweetest Produce
June 21, 2012
It's official, summer is here and SupermarketGuru has some suggestions and reminders regarding how to enjoy the coming (and in some parts of the country, current) months of summer heat with the season's freshest produce!
Here's a list of some in-season fruit to kick off your summer with a fresh, nutritious, and fruity splash.
Summer is the season for fresh figs. Fresh or dried, figs are one of the highest fruit sources of fiber, and they also contain significant amounts of potassium (great for replenishing losses in sweat), calcium, and iron.
The vibrant color of tender apricots gives away their rich content of beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A). Beta-carotene and vitamin C both in apricots, act as antioxidants in the body. Sun-sweetened apricots are also a good source of fiber and potassium. Tote a bag of apricots with you to the gym (along with your water bottle, of course) and enjoy them as convenient pre- or post-workout snack.
Plums and peaches are ripe and ready these balmy months. Luscious peaches and plums have beta-carotene and vitamin C as well as fiber. The skins of purple and red plums contain anthocyanidins, which are potent antioxidants.
The berry family is in season and bursting with flavor. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, huckleberries and more- these are high in fiber and vitamin C. The deep red and purple color of the berries also indicates the presence of the anthocyanadins. Cherries are another summer ripe fruit that contain these wholesome nutrients as well.
The tropical mangoes and papayas are irresistibly mouthwatering summer fruits. Succulent mangoes are rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C and fiber. In fact, just half a mango contains over 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A (as beta-carotene). Papaya is another rich source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, and fiber, and also contains potassium and folate. Folate prevents developmental defects in fetuses and helps supports cardiovascular health.
And what would summer be without ice-cold, refreshing watermelon. All the melons, including cantaloupe, casaba, and honeydew, are summer fruits. Cantaloupe with its peachy-orange flesh is rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C. The casaba melon contains vitamin C and potassium, and the honeydew is a good source of vitamin C. Juicy watermelon is a rich source of beta-carotene and vitamin C, and a good source of lycopene- an antioxidant that has been shown to prevent prostate cancer.
With so many delectable fruits to choose from, there's no reason not to get the minimum five servings a day. Bring easy to carry fruits with you everywhere: to school, work, gym, baseball game, picnics, and parties. Explore the wide variety of natural flavors at every meal and as refreshing snacks. So, whether you're exercising or just trying to stay cool, there's nothing quite as tasty and nutritious as beating the heat with the thirst-quenching fruits of summer. With the abundance of choices this season, every day this summer can be a sweet experience.
