No Korea Restarts Weapons-Grade Plant.
North Korea has restarted its weapons-grade nuclear power plant and fired five short-range missiles in two days, news reports and South Korean officials said today. Leaders worldwide condemned North Korea for Monday's underground nuclear test and the United Nations Security Council debated possible new sanctions. Retaliatory options were limited, however, and no one was talking publicly about military action. South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported that U.S. spy satellites have detected steam coming from a reprocessing facility at North Korea's main Yongbyon nuclear plant, indicating the North has restarted the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel rods to harvest weapons-grade plutonium. North Korea is believed to have enough plutonium for at least six atomic bombs.  MORE
ACLU Protests School Ban of 6th Grader Report
Wrongly citing a school policy on sex education, a California school illegally censored a sixth grader’s classroom presentation about Harvey Milk earlier this month. According to a demand letter sent by the American Civil Liberties Union to the Ramona Unified School District today, the school violated Natalie Jones’s free speech rights when it refused to allow her to give the presentation in class. Instead, the school improperly required classmates to get parental permission to see the presentation during a lunch recess.  MORE
Supreme Court Judge Nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
President Obama announced Tuesday that he will nominate U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court, a historic nomination that would make her the first Hispanic on the high court if confirmed by the Senate. The president called Judge Sotomayor "an inspiring woman whom I believe will make a great justice. He made the announcement before a crowd of government officials, lawmakers and staffers inside the White House East Room, with Ms. Sotomayor and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. at his side.
