Sugar is Toxic, but so is Red Meat, Salt, Refined GrainsApril 6, 2012
Dr. Sanjay Gupta minced no words on CBS' "60 Minutes" when he pointed to research taking on refined sugar. Why is sugar toxic? What other foods are harming your health? You are probably eating them for lunch today.
Why is Sugar Toxic?
Gupta points to weight gain as only one detrimental effect of refined sugar. Beyond adding unhealthy fat to the waistline, "sugar can take a serious toll on your health, worsening conditions ranging from heart disease to cancer," he says. In the course of the investigation, Gupta relied on the research of Dr. Robert Lustig. The Beaumont Health System summarizes Lustig's findings from "Sugar: The Bitter Truth." In simplest terms, ingestion of fructose and sucrose leads to obesity. Thirty percent of fructose ingested results in fat formation. A six-day study proved high-fructose intake results in a doubling of free fatty acids and triglycerides, which is related to insulin resistance and a five-fold increase of fat creation. A higher risk for diabetes and other fat-related diseases is the result.
Not Just Refined Sugars: Red Meat, Salt, and Refined Grains, too
Health Day News highlights that "eating a lot of red meat may shorten your life." Researchers outline heart disease, diabetes risk and cancer are conditions brought on by the consumption of red meat. A 28-year study found that of 24,000 deaths, some 6,000 resulted from cardiovascular disease while 9,000 occurred due to cancer. Extrapolating risk percentages, Dr. Frank Hu calculated one serving of red meat increases the risk of dying by 12 percent.
