From Andrea Metcalf - Four ways to stay awake in the afternoon
Jul-24-2012

Have you hit that afternoon slump? Do you feel like you need a nap in the middle of the day? It could be from a high carbohydrate lunch or maybe not enough sleep. In either case here are a few things you can do to boost your energy in the afternoon.

Try some dark chocolate!

Eating about one ounce of dark chocolate ( preferably 78% pure dark chocolate or more - avoid milk chocolate ) can boost your happy brain chemicals and keep you alert and more focused.

Minty fresh! Try some fresh mint. Either snipping a few leaves or rubbing them between your fingers for the smell can pep up your senses. You can also try eating a curiously strong peppermint ( I love Altoids ). Researchers at University of Virginia found that athletes who smelled peppermint before their workouts had more energy.
Peppermint Patty! Try combining both peppermint and dark chocolate in a small treat like a peppermint patty. York Peppermint patties are a nice snack under a 100 calories.

Doodle away! Clinical researchers say that doodling can help keep your brain focused and alert. So in you find yourself in an afternoon meeting and starting to nod off; pull out a piece of paper and pen and start doodling. Don't worry the boss will think you're not paying attention, this will keep you more in tune with the conversation.
