A mortgage, making financial decisions without parents, a retirement fund, food shopping and a will are the top signs of an adult, British researchers say.
Tracy Fletcher, head of corporate communications for Skipton Building Society, said the study of 2,000 people uncovered the 50 things indicating adulthood, but almost all agreed owning a home was tops on the list -- something made much harder since the credit crisis in 2008, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
Many of the items on the list involved a home -- being able to bleed a radiator, owning a lawn mower, planting a flower garden, changing a light bulb and owning guest towels, Fletcher said.
"Owning a house topped the poll as two-thirds of Brits felt this was the most significant factor when it comes to aging and accepting responsibility, and yet it is now harder than ever," Fletcher told the Telegraph. "The inability to complete rites of passage as basic as standing on their own feet financially, and owning their own home, is effectively infantilizing people and leaving us with a generation ... who remain teenagers into their late 20s."
